Aromas from the kitchen, scent from the boudoir, flowers from the garden: fragrances everywhere....As a baker girl/chef, it is no surprise that I am seduced by scent. In addition to working with fragrance and flavors in the bakery and kitchen, I also dabble in candle making, personal and custom perfumes, and hand milled soaps as well as home fashioned incense and potpourri. I am happy to share what I also sleuth out in the way of the best in special and unique scents (in toiletries, perfumes, aromatherapy oils, soaps, cosmetics, and incense) for my visitors. Sometimes, I stray to related niceties, such as books on the subject, or chimes, and other softer-side-of-lifestyle products. Here is where you will my reviews and special discoveries on scent, perfumes, soaps, candles, home fragrance, cosmetics, even men's scents, and sometimes a recipe or two for potpourri, homemade cologne, vanilla or lavender sleep pillows. Scent of a Baker is an oasis for your senses. You can also check out more of my fragrance reviews at

The Delicate subject of thinning hair and remedies….

It could be winter, a woman’s age, stress, heredity, vitamin deficiency, thyroid and hormone issues but most women, at one point or another, have concerns about thinning hair or an episode when their hair could use some TLC.  Your hair, well groomed and healthy looking, is one of the primary parts of your appearance.  When your hair looks great, you feel great! Silly but true. To get your hair back on track is really a multi-pronged program of rejuvenation and hair health that takes persistence. It is about nutrition, rest, vitamins, better shampoos, avoiding product build up, gentle combing techniques, and some natural topical treatments. Here are my findings.

There are medications one can apply internally that promise luxurious, full hair regrowth. Many of them do report wonderful; success in consumer use, and most of them report no side effects but neither are they 100% Food and Drug tested or approved and there are, as yet, no official studies that comprehensively survey possible side effects.  You can read more on the Internet on many hair-thinning sites and make up your own mind. Most of the remedies seem to be a mega dose of vitamins and include what is known as DHT blockers. I don’t endorse them but you can read up and draw your own conclusions. Certainly there are options.

There are also topical applications and some, like Rogaine do work, but you should know that the treatments for male hair regrowth are different than those for women. Rogaine for Women is in the States; currently, it is not available in Canada (according to the Rogaine website). So, what’s left? A few things. First of all, you can do a lot to just stop unnecessary hair breakage, assist shine and enlist better hair growth. Here are some discoveries I have researched (and tested). If you are diligently about eating and sleeping well, as well as doggedly doing a little of everything on this list, whether you have great hair or hair needing a little extra care, all these things can only help and are, all natural.

Vitamins and Protein in Your Diet for Great Hair –
What You Eat Effects Your Hair!
Protein is composed of the amino acids essential for the building of new cells, including hair. Five amino acids are of particular relevance to hair growth - cystine, cysteine, methionine, arginine and lysine. Inadequate protein intake over a lengthy period can force hair into the resting phase with shedding a few months later. It is obvious then that sufficient portions of protein rich foods should form part of your daily diet. The best sources of dietary protein are lean meats, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, soy, nuts, grains and seeds. At this time of year, when diets take the main stage, don’t forget to get enough protein in your body –  just make it lean protein. Vitamin C and A are associated with healthy hair, although you have to take care not to overdose on Vitamin A (and it, as C is, is found naturally in food sources), as well as Vitamin E (the fish oil vitamin or add flax seed to your breads). But most often, it is vitamin B6 and B12 that are mentioned with healthy hair.

Vitamin B6
- Prevents hair loss, helps create melanin, which gives hair its color. Food sources: Brewer's yeast, liver, whole grain cereals, vegetables, organ meats and egg yolk. Daily dose: 1.6 mg. Warnings: High doses can cause numbness in hands and feet. Vitamin B12 - Prevents hair loss. Food sources: Chicken, fish, eggs and milk. Daily dose: 2 mg.

Scalp Treatments
Beef Marrow Shampoos
Best Herbal Remedy from Fitter Hair Products
Scalp treatments do help and you can find capsules you apply for a few weeks that are supposed to rejuvenate the scalp (where your hair sprouts from!). Beef marrow shampoos are as old as talc and time (there are 1-2 that come from France) and even the original Breck shampoo had beef marrow pomade in it. As old-fashioned as beef marrow shampoo is, it does work to produce healthier looking, shinier hair. (I tried it). But one of the best treatments was an all-natural herbal remedy from Anthony Fitter Products (read more below). There are capsules (the look like a clear solution in a odd shaped glass capsules and they are said to be scalp conditions) in most pharmacies that promise healthier scalps and do work to some extent if you are consistent about applications (they are also not inexpensive). Fitter Products Famous All Natural, Hair ‘Regenerator’ from the UKThe one product that was particularly notably successful was a best-kept UK secret. Made entirely of natural ingredients (once it arrives, you have to refrigerate it) is a product called Regenerator. It is hyped to increase hair thickness, body, luster, shine, volume, and alleviate most of the problems ‘thinning hair encounters due to aging and stress of modern life.’ The product comes in a squat jar that has to be refrigerated to keep and then rewarmed to use (but you can microwave it a short time, according to Regenerator spokesman, Anthony Fitter). The product has a unique but not unpleasant fragrance and looks like a grainy mud and is reminiscent something you would find at a unique and upscale spa. It is sparingly applied onto the scalp and combed through the rest of the hair, the head is capped and the stuff sits for 3-4 hours (although Fitter said 1 hour is also fine). You do this a few times a week to begin with and between applications 4 and 7, you will see results. I saw results after two times. My hair was definitely shinier and more manageable. How does it work and/or what is in it? Fitter uses a formula developed (since improved by him) by his herbalist grandfather. In Regenerator, you will find a cocktail of all-natural hair nutrients that are hand blended, in small production volume, to produce what is somewhat of a wonder, or at least, wondrous product. There is not one product that comes with such devoted attention from its creator. Anthony Fitter himself is the most attentive spokesperson for his own product. He offers unrivaled, free, email support and after one purchase, even hesitates to suggest you buy more product feeling only a little of his product goes a long way. It does. This is well-worth trying. I like it because it showed results, has company support, is all natural has no harmful side effects and all in all, in its natural, old time remedy approach, has a strong appeal. You feel you are doing something healthy, positive and old-fashioned effective for something basic and essential: your hair.

Most hair sites and products seem like they are selling snake oil and include all the hype of that mentality; Hair Regenerator, by Fitter Hair Products is relatively low-key in sales pitch and high in believability and results.  Speaking of which, once you have the results you want, they are lasting. Fitter suggested that the hair is’ regenerated’ in that his product actually ‘feeds’ the scalp and assists its overall health but repairs the hair shaft itself but moreover, and most importantly, also induces a hair shaft that might be (for whatever reason) producing one hair strand, to produce 2-3 strands (over time) thereby increasing the volume of your hair. A little of this product (15-20 ml) goes a long way. It also tames frizz, increases root lift, enhances even colored hair and protects the hair shaft by placing a ‘sealant’ around the hair shaft. Upscale hair salons in the UK offer this product and you can order it online directly from It usually arrives cold; put it in the fridge right away and then use it as directed. A treasure of a product.

Cleanest Hair and Healthy Hair Follicles
Hair needs to be clean to growth well and look as great as it can. There is indeed product build up that can block the hair follicle and stomp its growth or maximal appearance. Once a week, do use a cleansing shampoo such as Neutrogena –this will remove a lot of residue that can block the hair follicle and reduce shine overall. Do not use any product for a day or two to let hair rest. Color your hair less often, as dyes can also break and damage hair, if too frequent or try a health-store henna based dye.Thickening Shampoos, Detanglers  There are thickening shampoos which help, as well detanglers (one of the is from L’Occitane who offer alavender detangler), which are specialty cream rinses that insure you do not unnecessarily break the hair when it is wet, when combing it out. Do also use a wide-toothed comb when combing out wet hair. Most health food stores sell an excellent $3.00 natural, wood, wide-tooth comb that works well for that purpose.

T3 Tourmaline Ionic Hair Dryer 1800
Super fast, (try 2 times faster) Hair Dryer that leaves your hair shiny and silky!
What more can you ask for? Something that leaves your hair shiny, dries it 60% faster, is lightweight, has some 1800 watts of raw power, and safeguards against moisture and color loss? This dryer performed so quite and left our hair totally frizz free. We are hooked. How does it work? It is the future in hair drying as it uses ground up semi-precious gemstones, tourmaline and works by adding negative ions that break-up the water molecules in wet hair for a faster surface evaporation. Lost you? It means, it uses negative ions in service to drying hair from the inside out. The unit is the newest standard in salons for it speeds up drying time but also saves wrists from burning out (less time and also lighter unit). This dryer also has a cool shot finishing touch, which delivers a cooler burst of air to finish the job. Listed at $200, the Tourmaline Company also offers a full line of equally effective flat irons (in a few styles). If you are in the market for a new dryer and want to invest in one, rather than three lesser ones, this is the ticket. Featured in Style, Bazaar and People, this is the best thing to safeguard the best haircut and color treatments you are already spending too much on!

Intrakerra by Image (check google for online sources but I get mine from Ebay - prices are better. A bottle lasts about 8 months)
is about the best thing for silky hair with body. It is applied after shampooing - to towel dried hair. This and Terramax are two of the most amazing, high performance products around.
