A Note from June 2025

Dear Bakers and Friends,

Welcome to the June 2025 issue of Betterbaking.com! I’m in a mid-spring, early-summer mood in the kitchen and the recipes this month reflect that duality. In fact, that’s also the twin nature of the month of Gemini. For those of you who are Geminis or have a couple of them in your midst, happy birthday to you and them as well as happy Father’s Day and congratulatory convocations to all.

Speaking of twins, I was always fascinated the by people on the planet we share the same name with but we don’t know and have never met. We all have a few doppelgangers. I believe someone did a documentary based on that years ago, but I couldn’t find it. It’s interesting to think of what the other people with your same name are up to and years ago, I found out.

I don’t know who reached out first but many years ago I got stayed in touch with Marcy Goldman, the LA-based actress who has been a character actor for decades. She’s appeared in Star Trek, Will and Grace and most recently, as “Yenta #2’ on the hit Netflix series, Nobody Wants This. If you tune into the first episode, you will see the vivacious, actress Marcy Goldman appear at in the last three minutes. Her character is trying to get the rabbi to date her daughter, and as Yenta #2, Marcy Goldman LA is as pushy as one would expect a woman trying to marry off her daughter to be.

Marcy Goldman-the-actress and I refer to each each other West Marcy Goldman or East Marcy Goldman for our respective coasts. Or as "Marcy Jane" (the actress’s second name) or "Marcy Lynn" (Lynn being my second name). We are born the same year but we’re six months apart. When we were first in touch (thanks to the Internet) Marcy Jane Goldman  LA/West Coast Marcy told me that at times, people at her synagogue thought she wrote Jewish Holiday Baking in addition to her acting career. Anytime I freelanced for the LA Times over the years, she was also asked if the feature in the newspaper food section was hers. Conversely no one has confused me as an actress on Will and Grace! On a last note, I always do a double take (!) when my other-Marcy emails me because I always think I was emailing myself something and then I realize - right -it's my twin.

Marcy 1.0 and Marcy 1.2 wish each other happy birthday each year and remark at times about our respective and healthy careers for which we are both grateful and wonder at times if it’s a case of something in the water or ‘something in a name’.  I’m no actor and Marcy Jane is not a professional baker but when I think about our common name I also wonder about the other Marcy Goldmans out there and what they’re up too. They say everyone has a double or a twin. Who’s yours?

And now, back to baking…

I try and keep things seasonal here for all our sakes as well as find some little-er things to bake since not everyone needs a cheesecake recipe each month. The greater guide for me as a baker of late also Gemini-Esque in nature because aside from seasonal baking, I’m either refining classics or exploring worthy trends. The Blueberry Granola Sour Cream Coffee Cake and Frozen Butter Biscuits are examples of the former and the Pistachio-haloed Challah and Roasted Strawberry Tiramisu are examples of the latter. No matter which recipe you choose to try out or all four, I assure you success and gustatory pleasure. These are absolutely delectable recipes that I’m so proud to share. Enjoy! By the way, the cherry art was irresistible and to go with it, because how can I show you cherries and not provide? Here’s a beautiful cherry biscotti

Warm wishes from my kitchen to yours, peace in baking,

Marcy Goldman
